The Mount Barker Centre Catalyst Project unlocks the regions potential to create a new destination in the town's centre on the long under-utilised 12,000m2 site on Hutchinson Street.

In November 2020, Burke Urban Investments was selected as the preferred development partner to work with Mount Barker District Council in activating the large vacant, and long underutilised site between Hutchinson Street, Morphett Street, Stephen Street and Druids Avenue. This project is now referred to as the Mount Barker Centre Catalyst Project.

Our Approach

A compelling proposal was put forward to develop the 12,000m2 site that not only delivers significant community and commercial benefits, but also showed an appreciation of the broader opportunities this development can have for the town centre, including connections up to Gawler Street and beyond. The winning proposal incorporated input and advice from the best urban designers, community and commercial minds to present an exciting roadmap for the heart of Mount Barker.

Our Vision

Activity day or night, throughout all Four Seasons. A new destination for locals, and a regional tourism attraction.

Safe and comfortable streetscapes, promoting community gathering through interactive art and integrating areas for activity and engagement.

Flexible retail and commercial tenancy opportunities including professional services on Hutchinson Street, experiential retailing around the town square and pop-up opportunities for emerging businesses and artists.

The Opportunity

A catalyst project to achieve the goals sought within both the Council's 2012 Town Centre Strategy and the principles of their competitive Expression of Interest.

This project is expected to provide a true once in a generation opportunity to develop a placemaking and city-shaping project that elevates and transforms the Mount Barker City Centre, complementing and linking to the well-established activity bases in the centre.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement for the Town Square will commence in November 2020 with community open days, drop-in sessions and online surveys proposed as some of the mechanisms for input and feedback. Further details on the full range of activities and events planned to occur over the month-long community engagement period will be announced in the coming weeks.

Burke Urban will also present its innovative and thoughtful masterplan and vision for the whole site allowing the community to finally understand why Burke Urban was selected as Council's preferred partner for this project.

Expression of Interest

Burke Urban Investments will engage in a formal public launch for the project in 2023 upon completion of the community engagement and concept design phase. In the mean time, we welcome your enquiry and Expression of Interest.
