Daniels Street: Making waves in Byron Bay

A pro surfer is making waves with his debut development project in famed Byron Bay, releasing a rare offering for those who’ve dreamed of living in luxury in a brand-new home opposite the beach.

Daniels Street is in a pocket known as the ‘golden grid’ for its prized proximity to the ocean and the heart of town, and comprises four high-end beach houses, each with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms.

“The location, build design and quality of finishes make these properties very special,” selling agent Brad Cranfield of Pacifico Property said.

It’s rare for brand-new homes to come onto the market in booming Byron Bay, Mr Cranfield pointed out, especially in a spot as coveted as this – just across from Clarkes Beach, The Pass, and the start of the walk to the famed lighthouse.

“Only two properties will be sold as Owen is keeping one and so is the developer, Burke Urban, which is a family run business with approximately 40 years’ experience in the development industry,” Mr Cranfield said.

And the Owen he refers to is Owen Wright, the celebrated Australian pro surfer and bronze medal-winning Olympian.

“Aside from surfing, my other passion in life has been investing in property [but I only] ever buy if it’s a destination I could see myself living in,” Mr Wright said.

“Having had property in Byron Bay for the past decade, I know how hard it is to come by land on a quiet street right next to the beach.

“When I saw Daniels Street hit the market in 2018, I could see its obvious potential as a development, but the ability for families to live a stone’s throw away from one of the nicest beaches in the world.”

He bought the block and has teamed up with Burke Urban on the joint venture, and he and wife Kita worked with architect Michael Hogg to give input on the design.

Mr Hogg said each of the four homes had been tailored to suit their position on the site, as well as their solar orientation and relationship to the other dwellings.

The L-shaped plans are centred around private north-facing courtyard gardens with covered outdoor living spaces and plunge pools.

“Extensive use of sliding glass doors blurs the boundary between inside and out, to enable a casual outdoor lifestyle in a refined sanctuary for sub-tropical living,” Mr Hogg said.

Each of the four bedrooms also feature full-width balconies, while the homes boast two living spaces, a gourmet chef’s kitchen, and two-car garages.

When he first discovered the site, Mr Wright said he imagined future occupants making the most of the exceptional lifestyle on offer.

“The vision I saw was keen longboarders surfing The Pass every morning or doing the lighthouse walk, dads teaching their groms to surf in kid-friendly waves and then getting their own barrels around the corner at Tallows, and parents walking the kids to school up the street passing Top Shop for their morning coffees.

“The vision continued with [making the most of] Byron’s best restaurants, all within walking distance, and knowing that festival and live bands are always in town.”

Mr Cranfield said interest so far has been strung, particularly from buyers in Sydney and Melbourne but also among locals looking to upgrade.

He is now inviting expressions of interest from $6 million.
